WhatsApp Link in Bio: Add a Click-to-Chat Button You Can Track
Someone sees your post, wants to order, and opens your profile. The bio says “DM for orders.” They write in Instagram, you answer from a phone that also runs the shop, and three days later the message is buried under a hundred others.
A WhatsApp link moves that conversation to the place where you actually sell. One tap opens a chat with your number, with a message already typed. No number to copy, no contact to save, no “is this the right account?”
This guide shows how to build the link, how to put it in your bio, how to print it as a QR code, and how to know how many people tapped it.
What a WhatsApp link looks like
The short form is a wa.me URL with your phone number:
https://wa.me/905551234567
Add a pre-filled message with ?text=:
https://wa.me/905551234567?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20post%20and%20want%20to%20order
Two rules for the number:
- International format, digits only. Country code first, then the number. No
+, no leading0, no spaces, no dashes. A Turkish mobile0555 123 45 67becomes905551234567. - The number must have WhatsApp. Personal or Business account, both work.
The message has to be URL-encoded: spaces become %20, commas %2C, line breaks %0A. You can type that by hand, or skip it.
Build the link in ten seconds
The free WhatsApp link generator takes a phone number and a message, does the encoding, and gives you a link to copy. It also shows WhatsApp’s text formatting, so *bold* and _italic_ in the pre-filled message render the way you expect.
Make the message do some work for you. Compare:
HiHi, I saw the red jacket on Instagram. Is size M in stock?
The second one tells you where the person came from and what they want before you type a word. More on that below.
Three ways to put it in your bio
1. Paste the wa.me link in the website field
Fastest option. Works on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and anywhere else that takes a URL.
The downside is one link and zero data. You will not know if ten people or a thousand tapped it, and if you change numbers you have to edit every profile.
2. Put a short link in front of it
Create a short link in Linked.is that points to your wa.me URL, and paste the short link in the profile instead.
What that gives you:
- Click counts with country, device, browser, and referrer for every tap.
- A fixed URL. Change the number or the message in the dashboard. The link in your bio stays the same.
- The app opens directly. Linked.is recognizes WhatsApp destinations when the link is created, so on a phone the tap goes straight into the WhatsApp app.
If you post on more than one platform, make one short link per platform. Same destination, separate numbers, and you see which app sends the people who actually write.
3. Add a button on your bio page
If your bio already points to a Linked.is profile, add WhatsApp as a button next to your shop, menu, or booking links. Each button has its own click count, so the profile stats show how WhatsApp compares with everything else on the page.
You can also add more than one WhatsApp button, each with its own pre-filled message:
- “Order” opens
Hi, I’d like to place an order. - “Wholesale” opens
Hi, I’m asking about wholesale prices. - “Support” opens
Hi, I need help with my order.
Same number, three buttons, and every chat arrives already sorted.

The pre-filled message is your tracking
A WhatsApp link opens an app, not a web page, so UTM tags never reach any analytics tool. The link stats tell you how many people tapped. The message tells you who they are.
Put the source in the text:
| Where the link sits | Pre-filled message |
|---|---|
| Instagram bio | Hi, I’m coming from your Instagram profile and want to order. |
| TikTok bio | Hi, I saw your TikTok. Is this still available? |
| Menu QR code | Hi, I’m at table ___ and want to order. |
| Packaging insert | Hi, I just received my order and have a question. |
Now the first line of every chat names the channel, and your WhatsApp history becomes a source report you can search.
For links that open a website, the UTM parameters guide covers the tagging system.
WhatsApp QR codes for print
Shop windows, table cards, flyers, business cards, and packaging all want a scan-to-chat code. The QR generator in Linked.is has a WhatsApp type: enter the number and message, then download PNG or SVG.
Two tips:
- One code per place. Put a short link behind each code so the stats count window scans separately from table scans.
- Say what happens. “Scan to order on WhatsApp” gets more scans than a bare square.
Common mistakes
A plus sign or a leading zero in the number. wa.me/+90555… and wa.me/0555… both fail. Country code and digits only.
An unencoded message. A raw & or # in the text cuts the message off. Use the generator.
One link everywhere. You cannot tell Instagram from the flyer. Use one short link per placement.
No reply plan. A click-to-chat button promises a chat. If the answer takes a day, the button hurts more than it helps. Set an away message or business hours in WhatsApp Business.
Changing the number and forgetting old posts. Stories, Highlights, and printed cards keep the old URL. A short link in front of the number fixes this once.
FAQ
Can I add a WhatsApp link to my Instagram bio?
Yes. The website field accepts a wa.me URL. For click counts and a URL you can change later, put a short link or a bio page in front of it.
Does the link work on desktop?
Yes. On a computer it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app with the same chat and message.
Do I need WhatsApp Business?
No. The link works with any number that has WhatsApp. Business accounts add catalogs, quick replies, and away messages, which help once the button starts getting traffic.
What is the difference between wa.me and api.whatsapp.com?
Both open the same chat. wa.me/number?text= is the short form, and api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=number&text= is the long form. Use the short one.
Can I see how many people tapped my WhatsApp link?
Yes, if the link goes through Linked.is. Short link stats show clicks by country, device, browser, and referrer. On a bio profile, each button has its own click count. Free plans keep seven days of analytics, Pro keeps 90 days, and Team keeps full history; see pricing.
Start with one button
Build the link in the generator, write a pre-filled message that names the channel, and put a short link in front of it. Check the count in a week. Create a free account to get a bio page, short links, and WhatsApp QR codes in one dashboard.
